(10.1.2016) Sgiath a’
Chaise, 12.7km, 4hrs56 min
With the forecast looking rather grim, 40-50 mph winds
& white out conditions a good plan would be to stay low. Peter had the
Graham Sgiath a’ Chaise in mind therefore the majority decided to follow suit.
Myself, Tom, Lynn, Adrian, Peter, Henry, Mike & Sheila who was out with the
Highways for the first time. The bus dropped us off at Ardchullarie More &
we headed North on the forestry track up Glen Ample with a light snow shower
trickling down. At the end of the forest we followed the dyke/fence West then
up the steep but short climb to the crags at Creag a Mhadaidh. From here it was
a short bimble along to the summit in easy going soft snow, ankle deep at
times.
Conditions were dry & not much wind but visibility was poor.
A few of us took bearings from the summit down to the communication tower &
start of the landrover track which we just about over shot. Good navigational
team work was called for again through Strathyre Forest as the path on the 1:25
map down to the Rob Roy way did not materialise. Peter suggested following the
stream down a fire break which turned into a slight path. From the track it was
a short walk to the Mhor Hotel for a couple of cheeky pints & good food
& company.
